There are many who still refer to the company as Pye Telecom, but the Pye name was dropped in 1987 in favour of Philips Telecom, even though Philips had held a controlling interest since 1967.

On the 1st July 1996, the company is known as Simoco Telecommunications Ltd. (Simoco = Systems and Mobile Integrated Communications.) The people, the places, the phone numbers are all the same, but the company is no longer part of the Philips organisation.

It has been bought out by a group headed by the former MD  of the Mobile Radio Division of Philips, Ian Mackenzie, with backing from CINVen, the venture capital arm (Coal Investments) of the old Coal Board, who have a reputation in the City as being shrewed judges of a good buy. Philips still retain a minority interest.
